World Whisky

World Whisky brings together whiskies produced outside Scotland, showcasing how different countries have developed their own approaches to distillation, maturation and flavour. While the basic principles of whisky production remain similar, local grains, climates, water sources, cask types and production traditions can create very different styles from one country to another.

Japan is renowned for precise, elegant whisky influenced by Scottish techniques, while Ireland is known for smooth and often triple-distilled styles. American whiskey includes bourbon, rye and Tennessee whiskey, with new oak casks playing a major role in flavour development. Countries such as Canada, India, Taiwan, Australia, England and Wales have also established increasingly respected whisky industries of their own.

Climate has a particularly important influence on world whisky. Warmer countries such as India and Taiwan can experience much faster interaction between spirit and oak, while cooler climates generally produce slower maturation. Different regulations also apply from country to country, meaning terms such as single malt, bourbon and rye can carry specific legal definitions depending on where the whisky is made.
