The distillery has had its share of ups and downs over the years, including periods of closure, but its reputation for rich, characterful whisky has only grown stronger.
GlenDronach is best known for its full-bodied, sherry-led style. The spirit is matured primarily in Spanish Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks, creating a whisky packed with notes of dark fruits, treacle, Christmas cake, spice and chocolate. It’s a bold, warming style that appeals to those who enjoy depth and richness rather than lighter, delicate drams.
Traditional floor maltings were used at the distillery until the 1990s, and GlenDronach continues to use a pair of distinctive, squat copper stills that help produce a weighty, robust spirit. Combined with patient maturation, this gives the whisky its trademark intensity and structure.
Today, The GlenDronach offers a strong core range alongside well-regarded single casks and limited releases, making it a favourite among enthusiasts who appreciate classic, sherried Highland single malt with real substance and heritage behind it.
