Different raw materials, still types, climates and maturation methods create an exceptionally diverse category, ranging from light, crisp rums to rich, complex and heavily aged expressions.

The Caribbean remains at the heart of rum production, with countries including Jamaica, Barbados, Cuba, Trinidad and Guyana each developing distinctive traditions. Jamaican rum is particularly associated with characterful pot-still spirit, Barbados with balanced aged rum, while Guyana is famous for Demerara rum and its historic wooden stills. Rum is also produced extensively in countries such as Venezuela, Guatemala, Panama, the Philippines and across the French Caribbean.

Rum can be divided into styles including white, gold, dark, Navy, spiced and flavoured rum, although terminology and regulations vary between producing countries. Maturation in oak can introduce flavours of vanilla, caramel, tropical fruit, spice and toasted wood, while unaged and lightly aged rums often retain more of the fresh sugarcane or molasses character of the original spirit.
