Single Cask Whisky

Single cask whisky is bottled from one individual cask rather than being created by combining whisky from several different barrels. Because every cask develops differently during maturation, each release can have its own distinctive flavour, colour and character, even when it comes from the same distillery and was filled with spirit produced on the same day.

About Single Cask Whisky

Single cask whisky is bottled from one individual cask rather than being created by combining whisky from several different barrels. Because every cask develops differently during maturation, each release can have its own distinctive flavour, colour and character, even when it comes from the same distillery and was filled with spirit produced on the same day.

Single cask bottlings are often released in limited quantities, with the number of bottles determined by the size of the cask and how much spirit remains after maturation. Bourbon barrels, hogsheads, sherry butts, wine casks and other types of oak can all be used, each influencing the whisky in different ways. Many single cask releases are also bottled at cask strength, although this is not a requirement.

Unlike standard distillery releases, which are usually blended from multiple casks to maintain a consistent house style, single cask whisky highlights the individual character of one particular barrel. Bottles commonly display details such as the cask number, distillation date, bottling date and total outturn, making these releases especially appealing to enthusiasts and collectors looking for distinctive and often unrepeatable whiskies.
