Islay
(eye-la) Islay is one of Scotland’s five recognised Scotch whisky regions, located off the west coast of Scotland in the Inner Hebrides. Although the island is only around 25 miles long and eight miles wide, it has an extraordinary concentration of whisky production. As of 2026, Islay has 11 working whisky distilleries, following the opening of Laggan Bay Distillery in April 2026. The island’s exposed Atlantic location, extensive peat bogs and long whisky-making tradition have helped establish Islay as one of the most distinctive and internationally recognised regions in Scotch whisky.
