Modern Welsh whisky was revived by Penderyn, which began distilling in the early 2000s and helped re-establish commercial whisky production in Wales after a long absence. Since then, newer producers such as Aber Falls, In the Welsh Wind and Hensol Castle have expanded the category and introduced a wider range of regional styles.

Welsh whisky producers use casks including bourbon, sherry, Madeira, wine and other specialist finishes to shape flavour and complexity. While the industry remains much smaller than Scotch or Irish whiskey, its combination of local provenance, innovative maturation and a growing number of distilleries has made Welsh whisky an increasingly distinctive part of the wider world whisky category.
