About Glenfarclas
Founded in 1836 and owned by the Grant family since 1865, Glenfarclas is one of the few remaining truly independent, family-run distilleries in Scotland. Situated in Speyside at the foot of Ben Rinnes, its name translates as “valley of the green grass”, reflecting its rural surroundings.
Over six generations, the Grant family has maintained a consistent focus on traditional methods and long-term maturation, helping to build Glenfarclas into one of the most respected names in Scotch whisky.
Glenfarclas is particularly known for its dedication to sherry cask ageing, with a strong emphasis on Oloroso casks sourced from Spain. This approach gives the whisky its distinctive character, typically rich and full-bodied with notes of dried fruit, spice, toffee and dark chocolate, supported by a solid malty backbone. The distillery still uses direct-fired copper stills, a more traditional method of heating that contributes to the weight and depth of the spirit.
Well regarded for its broad range of age statements, including older and limited releases such as the Family Casks series, Glenfarclas has built a loyal following among enthusiasts who appreciate classic, sherried Speyside whisky. Despite its international reputation, it remains firmly in family hands, with a clear emphasis on heritage, quality and consistency.
