Located on Islay's southern coast, the Laphroaig distillery is known for its pungent, heavily peated single malt whiskies. The profound and unique character of these oily, smoky, medicinal whiskies has divided opinion since the distillery was founded. Once highly prized by blenders, Laphroaig is now the best-selling Islay single malt, enjoyed by whisky enthusiasts the world over, including King Charles who awarded the distillery a Royal Warrant in 1994.
Founded in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston, Laphroaig occupies a windswept bay on Islay’s south coast, where Atlantic waves crash metres from its dunnage warehouses. Soft water from the Kilbride Stream, barley peated to around 45 ppm on traditional floor maltings (about 20 % of annual requirement) and slow distillation in pear-shaped copper stills create a robust spirit laden with phenolic smoke, creosote and maritime brine. Maturation in first-fill bourbon barrels – and, increasingly, sherry, port or European oak casks – takes place in sea-level warehouses that amplify coastal character. Since 1994 Laphroaig has been the only single malt to hold a Royal Warrant from HRH The Prince of Wales.
The core 40 % ABV 10 Year Old remains the benchmark for medicinal peat, while the 10 Year Cask Strength batch series unleashes it undiluted at 55–58 % ABV. Quarter Cask accelerates oak influence via smaller barrels, delivering creamy vanilla smoke; Triple Wood and Sherry Oak 10 layer sweet oloroso richness. Lore blends casks up to 21 years for deepest complexity, and the 16, 18 and 25 Year expressions show cedar, cocoa and dried-fruit evolution. Annual Friends of Laphroaig “Cairdeas” bottlings (e.g., Port & Wine, Madeira, Cask Strength Triple Wood) reward loyal fans, while travel-retail PX, QA and Brodir editions, distillery Warehouse 1 hand-fills and single-cask releases offer sought-after collectibles.
Owned today by Beam Suntory, the distillery still invites visitors to claim a lifetime rent of “one square foot of Islay” through the Friends of Laphroaig programme, reinforcing a close-knit global community. Recent sustainability upgrades include biomass boilers fuelled by local forestry off-cuts, ensuring smoky character continues with lower carbon impact.
