About Bowmore
(bow-MORE) Bowmore was founded in 1779 by David Simson and is widely regarded as the oldest licensed distillery on Islay. Established on the shores of Loch Indaal in the village of Bowmore, it has played a central role in the island’s whisky history for more than two centuries.
The distillery was expanded in the 19th century by William and James Mutter, production was halted during the Second World War when the site was commandeered by the RAF, and Bowmore is now part of Suntory Global Spirits.
Bowmore is especially known for a style that balances peat smoke with coastal character, citrus and gentle fruit, giving it a softer and more layered profile than many Islay malts. It remains one of the few Scotch distilleries with its own traditional floor maltings, while its No. 1 Vaults, situated below sea level, are among the most famous maturation warehouses in Scotch whisky.
