About Bumbu
Bumbu draws on the old Caribbean “bumbu” tradition, a spiced rum drink made by sailors using rum, sugar, water and spices during the 16th and 17th centuries. The modern brand is owned by Sovereign Brands, with Pernod Ricard adding Bumbu to its French portfolio in 2024. Bumbu Original is distilled and blended in Barbados at the historic West Indies Rum Distillery, founded in 1893.
Launched by Sovereign Brands in 2017 but rooted in West Indian history, Bumbu takes its name from the “bumbu” rums sailors and islanders laced with local spices as far back as the 1500s. The modern spirit is distilled in small copper pot stills at the West Indies Rum Distillery using molasses sourced from eight Caribbean nations, then aged on Barbados in once-filled Kentucky bourbon barrels. Master Blender traditions favour slow maturation that encourages banana, vanilla-bean and baking-spice notes without artificial colouring or flavouring.
The Original (35 % ABV) blends rums up to 15 years old with a secret mix of spices—think banana bread, cinnamon and toffee—bottled in a matte-black glass flask crowned by the brand’s X-shaped brass seal. Bumbu XO steps up to 40 % ABV and 18 years in ex-bourbon casks before a finishing spell in Andalusian oloroso sherry barrels, adding dark chocolate, orange zest and roasted coffee. Bumbu Crème folds The Original into fresh cream at 15 % ABV for a dessert-ready liqueur, while limited releases—such as cask-strength single barrels or gold-foiled anniversary editions—provide eye-catching collector pieces.
