About Wild Turkey
Wild Turkey traces its modern brand history to 1940, when Austin Nichols executive Thomas McCarthy took warehouse samples on a wild turkey hunting trip and the name became attached to the bourbon his friends kept requesting. The Lawrenceburg distillery behind the whiskey has deeper roots in Kentucky distilling, including the Ripy family’s 19th-century distillery at Tyrone, before Austin Nichols acquired the site in 1971.
Jimmy Russell joined Wild Turkey in 1954 and became central to its identity, maintaining a bold Kentucky bourbon style through decades of changing tastes. His son Eddie Russell joined in 1981 and was named Master Distiller in 2015, creating one of bourbon’s best-known multi-generational distilling families.
Campari acquired Wild Turkey from Pernod Ricard in 2009, later investing in distilling and bottling facilities in Kentucky. The range is led by Wild Turkey 101, supported by expressions such as Rare Breed, Kentucky Spirit, Longbranch and Russell’s Reserve, with a house style built around high rye content, firm spice, full proof and generous oak character.
