Its production style still reflects that background. Westward starts with a full-flavoured ale made from locally malted Pacific Northwest barley and ale yeast, ferments slowly at low temperature, double-distils in custom low-reflux pot stills, and matures the whiskey in new American oak barrels that are heavily toasted and lightly charred. Westward was also one of the early names behind the growth of American single malt in the US, as a founding member of the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission before the category received official federal recognition in January 2025.
Westward’s recent history has been more difficult. After taking investment through Distill Ventures in 2018, the business filed for Chapter 11 protection in April 2025. Most of its assets were then sold to a group of private investors in October 2025, with Thomas Mooney remaining in charge and the company returning to independent ownership.
