Kavalan was founded in Yilan County in 2005 by King Car Group and is widely regarded as Taiwan’s first whisky distillery. The name comes from the old name of Yilan and the indigenous Kavalan people. Its first bottling, Kavalan Classic, was released in 2008, and the Solist range followed in 2009.

Yilan’s warm, humid climate and Snow Mountain water sit at the heart of the whisky, and that faster, more intense maturation has become part of Kavalan’s identity. The distillery built its reputation around bold, cask-led bottlings rather than long age statements, especially through the Solist line, and its rise was unusually quick: Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique was named the World’s Best Single Malt at the 2015 World Whiskies Awards, and Kavalan Solist Fino Sherry was named Whisky of the Year at the 2025 International Whisky Competition.
