Sasanokawa became well known in the 1980s for Cherry Whisky, and Yamazakura was released in 2014 from mature whisky stocks that had been resting at the brewery through whisky’s quieter years. In 2016, the company set up the Asaka Distillery in a relocated earthen-walled storehouse, giving Yamazakura a dedicated modern distillery base in Fukushima.
Yamazakura combines a long sake-brewing history with postwar whisky making and the later revival of Asaka, rather than starting as a newly built standalone whisky project. The current range includes blended and pure malt releases such as Black Label, Pure Malt and Precious, with the brand sitting at the centre of Sasanokawa’s modern whisky identity.
