Featured in the 1001 whiskies you must try before you die book.
A Chateaux Petrus red wine (very expensive wine from the Pomerol region of Bordeaux/France) cask finished Octomore.
"On the nose, peat and honey glazed ham, then fruit appears from behind the smoke curtain:red berries, citrus, grape. On the palate it is sweet, peaty and hot with turkish delight, barley sugar, honey and lots of jammy cranberry, cherry, pomegranate and kumquat."
For some reason this is one of the hardest to find of the Octomore range (140ppm) even though there were 15,000 bottles, we just don't come across it and in fact this is the first bottle we have had for over a year now.
A very distinctive red wine cask influence to this ever so intriguing Octomore, the sort of experiment that only Bruichladdich could pull off with such aplomb. A drop of water really changes and tames this heavily peated beast.

Tasting Notes
Colour
Deep copper-amber with a warm ruby hue, a luminous ember-bright glow that hints at red-wine cask influence.
Nose
Peat and smoke thread through a bouquet of honey-glazed ham, cured spice and smoky paprika. Black grape and red berries rise from behind the haze, with citrus, cherries and a hint of leather. Earthy peat, a whisper of hickory barbecue and a lush red-wine glow from the Château Petrus finish.
Palate
Sweet, peaty and warming, this palate delivers honeyed heat with Turkish delight and barley sugar. Jammy cranberry, cherry, pomegranate and kumquat ride bold red-wine oak tannins, while black grape and treacle mingle with smoky, earthy notes. A fierce, indulgent balance of fruit sweetness and peat that lingers with peppery warmth.
Finish
Red wine tannins linger with tarry black grape, earthy red berries, and hints of fruity liquorice and treacle-baked ham. The smoke sticks like a bonfire in aged Bordeaux cask wood, as if barbecuing spicy meat, leaving a bold, smoky finish with a decadent warmth.
