Rye whisky and sweet vermouth have always made a strong line-up in the iconic cocktail Manhattan. So how come no-one ever matured whisky on vermouth casks? Well, now Stauning has with their El Clasico whisky.

The result of the experiment is more than successful: A warm-blooded whisky with a deep, amber colour and a sweet aftertaste with a touch of bitter botanicals. Perfect for an exclusive cocktail or enjoyed as it is in the company of a premium cigar.

Tasting Notes

Colour

Warm, deep amber with a sunlit glow and subtle mahogany undertones.

Nose

A bright bouquet of apples and oranges mingles with ripe plum, warm spices and cinnamon, crowned by roasted caramel. The aroma is inviting and caramel-tinged, hinting at depth and a touch of sweetness that lures the senses.

Palate

Sweet dried fruits and bright citrus sweep the palate, edged by a crack of crushed pepper. Vermouth’s lingering sweetness threads through the spice, with caramel warmth giving way to a long, bittersweet finish.

Finish

A warm, lingering finish of bittersweet vermouth that clings to the palate, unfurling citrusy, dried-fruit nuances and delicate bitter botanicals as the warmth slowly fades to a long, refined echo.

Stauning
Stauning was founded in 2005 on Denmark’s west coast by nine friends from outside the drinks industry, who began with two small pot stills in an old butcher’s shop in the village of Stauning. A major step followed in 2018, when the distillery opened its purpose-built new site, reflecting how far the project had grown from its early experimental beginnings.
