Port Ellen (silent) Rare Malts Selection Single Malt Scotch Whisky 20 Year Old · 1978 Vintage
Out of stock
This was one of the first official distillery bottles of Port Ellen to be released since the closure in 1983 and is hugely responsible for the notoriety of this now cult distillery. Amazingly fresh and clean for a twenty year old at this strength and this has retained lots of elegance and subtlety beyond its big peaty and oily coastal style that this much missed distillery was famous for.

Tasting Notes
Colour
Deep coppery amber with mahogany highlights
Nose
Fresh peat and smoky coastal breeze rise with sea-salt and iodine, a briny shimmer against a clean, elegant core. Subtle sherry sweetness threads through dried fruit and waxy, oily notes, with toasted oak providing backbone. A vibrant, high-strength aroma that hints at age, balance, and Port Ellen’s maritime power.
Palate
Powerfully peaty yet unexpectedly fresh, this Port Ellen coats the palate with a silky, oily texture. Briny sea-salt and iodine mingle with dark sherry notes—figs, raisins, cocoa—while burnt sugar and orange zest provide warmth. The finish is long and peppery, with charcoal smoke and leather, a coastal echo of sweetness and smoke.
Finish
Long, coastal finish with refined peat smoke and a saline tang that lingers. Sherry sweetness threads through dark fruit and cocoa, while iodine and briny minerals gradually recede into warm, polished oak. The heat remains seamlessly integrated, leaving a resinous, sophisticated glow on the palate.
