The 44-Year-Old whisky was drawn from three exceptional 1978 European Oak casks, specifically selected long ago for this new experiment. The whisky was then split into two casks which took diverging paths of maturation.

Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep amber-gold with bright copper highlights and a whisper of mahogany at the rim, hinting at decades of sherry-tinged maturity.

Nose

Light prickle on the nose with hints of baked pear and sweet edible seaweed. Maritime aromas rise, recalling a sea-side warehouse after years at sea. Faint smoke appears, ashy and bonfire-like, then a sweet whisper of soft fudge. With water, the sweetness and smoky edge come into sharper focus.

Palate

Firm, smooth body carries sweet-spicy flavors with surprising vitality for a 44-year-old. A faint mid-palate salt sits in a smoky warmth, revealing depth and freshness. With water, the palate softens to baked apple skins and lightly medicinal notes, while the charred bonfire ashes linger, delivering a refined, aromatic finish.

Finish

Luxuriate in its length, leaving aromatic sweet smoke to linger on the palate.

(Port-Ellen) As far as many people are concerned, Port Ellen is one of the great lost distilleries of Scotland. Port Ellen Whisky was founded in 1825 on the south shore of Port Ellen Islay by A. K. Mackay & Co. Closed in 1983 after being mothballed between 1930 and 1967. And with three Islay distilleries on the hands of the owners Port Ellen was the one to close with Caol Ila and Lagavulin surviving the 1980s closures.
