Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep copper-amber with a rich mahogany core and a whisper of burnished gold at the rim.

Nose

Dusty oak, white chocolate and honeyed cereal mingle with a bold, smoky peat that lingers.

Palate

On the palate, a bold spine of spicy oak carries green apples and a citrus-orange lift, with hints of old oak furniture and orange peel dusted with nutmeg. The mouthfeel is richly coating, as smoky peat threads through the mid-palate. A charred-oak core lingers, buoyed by a maritime, salty tang that drives a long, refined finish.

Finish

A sublime lingering finish of charred oak and maritime salt, with a smoky echo that lingers like sea air.

(Port-Ellen) As far as many people are concerned, Port Ellen is one of the great lost distilleries of Scotland. Port Ellen Whisky was founded in 1825 on the south shore of Port Ellen Islay by A. K. Mackay & Co. Closed in 1983 after being mothballed between 1930 and 1967. And with three Islay distilleries on the hands of the owners Port Ellen was the one to close with Caol Ila and Lagavulin surviving the 1980s closures.
