Distilled in 1978 and bottled at 27 years of age, this is the 6th annual Special Release from Diageo. Again at natural cask strength, just 4560 bottles were produced.

Slightly more fruit is present with this release, with lemon, orange and green apple aromas present. The classic peppery smoke and maritime elements come through on the palate with an oily, textured undertone.

Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep amber with copper-gold glow and mahogany edges.

Nose

Lemon, orange and green apple aromas lift from the glass, bright and fresh. A subtle maritime influence mingles with a peppery smoke nuance, hinting at the Islay peat beneath.

Palate

Peppery smoke and maritime brine lead the palate, with a hint of citrus zest and green apple weaving through the mid-palate. An oily, textured mouthfeel coats the tongue, extending into a long, coastal finish.

Finish

A long, resonant finish of peppery peat and maritime salt that lingers with a core of citrus zest. The oil-slick mouthfeel persists, slowly fading to coastal smoke and mineral notes, leaving a refined warmth and a whisper of orange rind.

(Port-Ellen) As far as many people are concerned, Port Ellen is one of the great lost distilleries of Scotland. Port Ellen Whisky was founded in 1825 on the south shore of Port Ellen Islay by A. K. Mackay & Co. Closed in 1983 after being mothballed between 1930 and 1967. And with three Islay distilleries on the hands of the owners Port Ellen was the one to close with Caol Ila and Lagavulin surviving the 1980s closures.
