Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep amber with mahogany depth and a copper-gold shimmer.

Nose

Peat-driven sea air, iodine and mineral brine mingle with dark sherry fruit. Raisin, fig and cocoa weave through toasted oak, while waxy maritime notes lend a buoyant freshness. Leather and subtle medicinal hints emerge with time, as coastal smoke settles into a refined, lingering finish.

Palate

Luxuriant peat and medicinal smoke mingle with sea-salt minerals and brine. Dark fruit notes of fig and raisin, with cocoa and spice, ride a creamy vanilla backbone, finishing long with ash, leather and maritime warmth.

Finish

Long, maritime peat coats the palate, carried by sea-salt and smoke, with whispers of vanilla, fig and dark chocolate. The finish evolves slowly into a refined, iodine-laced echo that lingers gracefully, tempered by warm oak.

(Port-Ellen) As far as many people are concerned, Port Ellen is one of the great lost distilleries of Scotland. Port Ellen Whisky was founded in 1825 on the south shore of Port Ellen Islay by A. K. Mackay & Co. Closed in 1983 after being mothballed between 1930 and 1967. And with three Islay distilleries on the hands of the owners Port Ellen was the one to close with Caol Ila and Lagavulin surviving the 1980s closures.
