Miyagikyo distillery was Nikka's second distillery, built in 1969 in the mountains of Sendai. Miyagikyo Single Malt is aromatic, fruity, and floral, in contrast the the subtly smoky, coastal whiskies from Yoichi. The whisky has aromas and flavours of a tropical fruit salad, hints of floral potpourri, and warming ginger spice.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Dried red berries, flapjacks, banana, raisin fudge, floral and herbal honey.

Palate

Crunchy red berries, stewed rhubarb, ginger, aromatic oak, floral notes.

Finish

More red berries and creamy oak, sweet spices. A very easy drinking and well balanced single malt from one of the lesser known of the japanese distilleries.

Nikka Miyagikyo
(NIK-ah mee-yah-gee-kyoh) Nikka was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, a Hiroshima-born brewer’s son who travelled to Scotland in 1918 to study whisky-making. After establishing Yoichi in Hokkaido, Taketsuru completed Miyagikyo in 1969 in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, as Nikka’s second distillery and a deliberate contrast to Yoichi’s bolder style.
