GlenAllachie 50th Anniversary Single Cask #10296 Whisky 39 Year Old · 1978 Vintage
In stock
One of the six-strong single cask single malt releases from the ‘new’ GlenAllachie. The capitalised ‘A’ in the middle of the name gives a clue to the distillery’s new owner: Billy Walker, previously of BenRiach (and indeed GlenDronach). Walker bought the distillery from Chivas Brothers last year and, in doing so, set about transforming GlenAllachie from a little-known distillery producing fillings for blends such as Passport and 100 Pipers, into a quality-oriented single malt in its own right.
A core range is set to launch in June but, while we wait for that, there is this initial release of six single cask single malts – spanning the years 1978 to 1991, with two each from 1989 and 1990 in the middle.

I reckon that Billy Walker’s done it again.

Tasting Notes
Colour
Deep burnished amber with coppery glints and a mahogany edge, a sunlit, viscous glow that hints at sherried sweetness and long oak maturation.
Nose
Time-worn and enigmatic, the nose opens with the ghost of an empty cupboard, then settles into cool Darjeeling tea, aromatic woods and resin. Sweet raisined fruit mingles with beeswax, before a bone-dry oloroso edge sharpened by age reveals true Sherry depth. As it evolves, whispers of spent cigar, rum-and-raisin and chocolate emerge, a poised, refined aroma that speaks of decades in a single cask.
Palate
Sweet, with a heavy concentration of fruit, yet that light airiness persists after all this time (and the attentions of a Sherry butt). Tannins are grippier, with dried mint and oregano, then date and pruney richness.
Finish
Coffee grounds linger deeply, with dark cocoa and aged oak lending a resinous warmth. A concentrated, contemplative finish that slowly fades into a refined echo of time well spent, like essence drawn from decades in a single breath.
