About Brora (silent)
(BRAW-ruh) Brora was founded in 1819 by the Marquess of Stafford, later the Duke of Sutherland, and originally operated as Clynelish. The present Clynelish distillery was built next door in the late 1960s, after which the original site was reopened in 1969 and renamed Brora. During the early Brora years it produced a heavily peated style for blending, before gradually returning to a lighter Highland character.
Production stopped in 1983 during a difficult period for the Scotch whisky industry, leaving Brora as one of Scotland’s most sought-after silent distilleries. Diageo began a major restoration project in 2017, and Brora reopened in 2021 after 38 years closed. The revived distillery uses restored equipment and continues to focus on Highland single malt shaped by waxy texture, gentle smoke and coastal Sutherland character.
