Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep amber with coppery highlights and a warm, honey-gold glow.

Nose

Like sea mist over a barrelhouse, the nose blends smoky barley with briny maritime lift. Vanilla from on-site new-oak barrels, toasted almond and caramel weave through roasted malt, with citrus zest and a whisper of spice; delicate peat and iodine braid into the finish, inviting another inhale.

Palate

Bold and full-bodied on the palate, with smoky malt, briny sea-salt and an assertive oak backbone from on-site new oak casks. Notes of dark chocolate, dried fruit and spice weave through vanilla and toffee, finishing long with peppery warmth and a maritime, mineral lift.

Finish

Yoichi delivers a long, smoky finish that clings with coastal brine and charred oak. Vanilla sweetness and toasted spice unfold, weaving with dark chocolate notes before tapering to a dry, resinous oak finale that lingers with refined power.

Nikka Yoichi
(YOH-ee-chee) Yoichi was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka Whisky, on the coast of Hokkaido. Taketsuru had studied whisky-making in Scotland and chose Yoichi for its cool climate, clean air and coastal setting, seeing it as well suited to the robust style of malt whisky he wanted to make. Nikka’s predecessor, Dai Nippon Kaju, was established in July 1934, with construction of Yoichi completed in October of the same year.
