Coffey Malt is made from 100% malted barley. However it is not categorized as “malt whisky” but as “grain whisky” since it is not distilled in a pot still. Rather, it has been distilled in a Coffey continuous still, resulting in a softer, fruitier whisky with a creamy texture. A little drier and spicier than the corn based Coffey Grain.

Somewhere style wise between Irish pot still (Redbreast) and Aged Bourbon, a thick and luxurious Malt with a difference.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Big and bold spice and mocha, black cherry, Bourbon like sweet vanilla and an almost pot still like character spice. Toasted and aromatic oak, bananas in butterscotch, chocolate, nuts and toffee.

Palate

Spiced chocolate and kirsch on a rich, sweet and oily body, more Bourbon like rich vanilla and even Rum like demorera sugar with aromatic spices and firm oak.

Finish

Black cherry, chocolate, creme brulee tops, hot toffee/butterscotch sauce, toasted vanilla, cinnamon and all spice, lingers long!

Nikka
Nikka was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, one of the key figures in the birth of Japanese whisky. The company began as Dai Nippon Kaju, with Yoichi Distillery completed the same year in Hokkaido, and the first bottle of Nikka Whisky followed in 1940. A second major milestone came in 1969 with the opening of Miyagikyo Distillery, giving Nikka two very different malt whisky styles to work with and helping define the house’s approach to blending.
