Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep copper-amber with radiant golden highlights and a touch of mahogany.

Nose

Brawny peat smoke entwined with sea-air iodine, lifted by bright citrus zest and toasted barley. Vanilla and lacquered oak deepen the bouquet, while a whisper of dark chocolate and minerals hints at a refined, coastal finish.

Palate

Bold, oily mouthfeel with a fierce, coastal smoke that lingers. Notes of burnt orange, green apple, and dark chocolate ride atop vanilla, toasted oak, and peppery spice. The finish is long and warming, with sea-salt, mineral tang, and a final ember of smoke.

Finish

An assertive, maritime finish where smoke coats the palate, brine and black pepper mingle with toasted oak and vanilla, then slowly recede into a long, warming, resinous finale that lingers with drying spice.

Nikka Yoichi
(YOH-ee-chee) Yoichi was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka Whisky, on the coast of Hokkaido. Taketsuru had studied whisky-making in Scotland and chose Yoichi for its cool climate, clean air and coastal setting, seeing it as well suited to the robust style of malt whisky he wanted to make. Nikka’s predecessor, Dai Nippon Kaju, was established in July 1934, with construction of Yoichi completed in October of the same year.
