Wire Works Whisky: Necessary Evil Finish is a limited-edition dual maturation of their lightly peated single malt. The whisky is first matured in ex-bourbon barrels before being finished in casks that once held Necessary Evil—a bold imperial stout brewed just up the road by the renowned Thornbridge Brewery. The result is a sweet and savoury dram, layered with hazelnuts, freshly roasted coffee, dark chocolate, dates, cranberry, and a subtle wisp of smoke.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Vanilla fudge and milk chocolate digestive notes lead with freshly roasted coffee, hazelnuts and flaked almonds. Creamy crème brûlée sits alongside baked apple, cassia and marzipan, while sage and strawberry laces add a curious, inviting lift.

Palate

Cacao nibs, Black Forest gateaux, cracked black peppercorns, salted caramel, Marmite on toast, buttery pastry, Medjool dates, Seville orange marmalade, a hint of spearmint, fresh espresso, and soft white candy.

Finish

Rich dark chocolate, tobacco, Murray Mints, dark cherries, roasted malt, and a delicate touch of smoke.

White Peak Distillery was founded in 2016 by Max and Claire Vaughan in Ambergate, becoming Derbyshire’s first full-scale craft distillery and the first whisky distillery in the Peak District region. Housed in the former Johnson & Nephew Wire Works on the banks of the River Derwent, within the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has built its identity around a strong sense of Derbyshire provenance and the industrial history of its home.
