Port Ellen (silent) Old Malt Cask Single Malt Scotch Whisky 21 Year Old · 1979 Vintage
Out of stock
A Port Ellen from the early days of the Old Malt Cask series, this is one of a string of single cask PE's that really put Douglas Laing on the map as an independent bottler. The company had vast stocks of Port Ellen after buying it in bulk for their blends, and were able to capitalise on the success of the Rare Malts bottlings which had made the distillery hugely sought-after.

Tasting Notes
Colour
Deep amber with coppery-gold highlights and a hint of mahogany.
Nose
Coastal peat smoke dominates, with iodine and sea-salt brine. Rich sherry fruit unfurls—raisins, fig and dark chocolate—alongside toasted nut and orange zest. Leather, ash and a whisper of spice ride a waxy, maritime breeze, hinting at velvet sweetness and quiet power in this aged Islay nose.
Palate
Opulent and oily on the palate, this Port Ellen unfurls coastal peat, iodine and sea-salt brine, wrapped in a silky mouthfeel. Sherry-cask influence lightly kisses dark fruit, cocoa and toasted oak, while medicinal notes ebb and flow with the smoke. The finish is long and warming, with ember peat and a persistent maritime echo.
Finish
Long, maritime finish with coastal smoke and sea-salt, slowly fading to dark fruit and subtle cocoa. Peppery spice lingers, balanced by toasted oak and a whisper of sherry sweetness, then a final, silken wave of peat that coats the palate and leaves a refined, lingering warmth.
