Port Ellen (silent) 8th Release Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky 29 Year Old · 1978 Vintage
Out of stock
An official bottling from the closed Port Ellen distillery, the 8th Release was bottled in 2008 at 55.3% ABV from whisky distilled in 1978 and matured for 29 years. Part of Diageo’s annual Special Releases, it is one of the last large official releases drawn from the distillery’s remaining stocks.
Long maturation brings depth and refinement to Port Ellen’s distinctive style, where dry peat smoke, coastal salinity and citrus brightness are balanced by soft oak, spice and a gentle oiliness. Bottlings from Port Ellen are increasingly scarce, and the Special Releases are regarded as some of the most representative examples of the distillery’s classic character.

Tasting Notes
Colour
Deep amber with coppery highlights and a mahogany undertone, a warm, sunlit glow in the glass.
Nose
Dry peat smoke and coastal salinity weave with bright citrus zest, delivering a maritime core that is crisp yet suave. Beneath, soft oak and spice cradle the aroma, while a silky oiliness lends depth and a lingering, refined finish.
Palate
Port Ellen's palate unfurls with dense, dry peat smoke and coastal salinity, lifted by bright citrus zest. Soft oak provides structure as spice notes—white pepper and clove—combine with an oil-rich, velvety texture. At 55.3%, it yields warm depth, while a lingering sea-salt and iodine finish stays refined, maritime, and unmistakably Islay.
Finish
Long and maritime, the finish carries dry peat smoke and coastal salt into a bright citrus glow, slowly fading over soft oak and spice. A gentle, oily warmth lingers, leaving a refined trace of sea air and subtle sweetness.
