Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep amber-gold with warm copper highlights and a honeyed, sun-kissed glow.

Nose

Caol Ila peat and sea spray rise, then a Tokaji glaze bathes the aroma. Honeyed apricot, dried orange, and marmalade mingle with raisin and vanilla-tinged almond. A whisper of cinnamon and waxy oak adds polish, while the smoke lingers—saline, coastal, and bright with honeyed warmth.

Palate

Coastal peat and iodine rise beneath a Tokaji-finished sweetness: apricot, honey and dried fruit weave with orange zest, vanilla and spice. Full, slightly oily mouthfeel carries sea-salt smoke, finishing long with raisiny sweetness and a warming, smoky echo.

Finish

Peat smoke lingers, tempered by Tokaji sweetness. Orange zest, apricot and caramel mingle with honeyed spice, fading into coastal mineral notes and warm oak. A long, warming finish that slowly dissolves into chocolate and lingering peat.

Caol Ila
(kowel-EEL-ah) Caol Ila was founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson near Port Askaig on Islay’s east coast, overlooking the Sound of Islay between Islay and Jura. Its Gaelic name refers to that stretch of water, and the site was chosen with access to sea transport and a water supply from Loch nam Ban. Ownership changed early, passing to Norman Buchanan in 1854 and then to Bulloch Lade & Co in 1863.
