Featured in the 1001 whiskies you must try before you die book
This is a blended scotch whisky drawn from stocks created and filled to cask on the 16th of June 1966. Founded on the docks of Glasgow in 1844, Whyte & Mackay has remained true to itself and its founders James Whyte and Charles Mackay’s pioneering spirit. While most distillers will settle for one maturation.
This rare, 40 year old masterpiece is dedicated the memory of John MacIlraith, former Managing Director of Whyte & Mackay. On the death of our founding fathers, MacIlraith took control of the Company in 1921 which he loyally served for an incredible 70 years. It is with this in mind that we have created a very high malt content blend – 70% malt to 30% grain – to deliver maximum balance and richness and is the exact opposite ratio to more mainstream offers.

Tasting Notes
Colour
Rich burnished amber with copper-gold highlights and a warm, mahogany-tinged edge, gleaming with honeyed depth.
Nose
Opulent malt-led aroma with carved, old-wood richness. Dried fig and apricot mingle with toffee, vanilla and milk chocolate, while orange zest and brioche slip through. Subtle sherry tint adds caramelised fruit and a touch of spice; toasted oak, tobacco leaf and a whisper of coffee grounds lend gravitas, finishing with a warm, polished sweetness.
Palate
Silky and richly textured, the palate delivers a core of malt-bright depth interlaced with dried fruit, fig and raisin, and a touch of marmalade. Dark toffee, cocoa and orange zest mingle with sherry-driven sweetness, while oak and spice provide refinement. A long, nutty warmth lingers, epitomising balance and reserve.
Finish
Opulent, lasting finish with sonorous sherry sweetness, dried fruit, and a whisper of nutty oak. Velvet malt richness lingers, evolving to chocolate and spice before a warm, slightly candied caramel glow.
