Bottlings don't come much more iconic than this. A 40 year old Single Cask Port Ellen from Gordon and Macphail (who else?!) as part of their Private Collection. Matured in a Single refill Sherry Butt, just yielding 407 bottles. Another piece of whisky history from the Elgin giant.

Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep amber with mahogany depths and a coppery glow.

Nose

Rich aromas of sun-ripened red apples mingle with delicate sweet spice. Strawberry liquorice and tangy citrus unfold, giving way to subtle smoked kipper notes.

Palate

Intense, mouth-warming crushed black pepper gives way to baked apple sweetness, with bright orange zest weaving through mature oak. A subtle herbal edge emerges, lending a poised, lingering complexity.

Finish

Long and sweet, the finish lingers warmly as wisps of peat smoke drift through the palate, leaving a subtle echo of sherry-rich oak.

(Port-Ellen) As far as many people are concerned, Port Ellen is one of the great lost distilleries of Scotland. Port Ellen Whisky was founded in 1825 on the south shore of Port Ellen Islay by A. K. Mackay & Co. Closed in 1983 after being mothballed between 1930 and 1967. And with three Islay distilleries on the hands of the owners Port Ellen was the one to close with Caol Ila and Lagavulin surviving the 1980s closures.
