Bottled by Gordon & MacPhail for the Private Collection range, this 1979 Glen Albyn comes from single cask #3857 and was bottled in 2023 at 43 years old. Matured in sherry wood and bottled at a natural strength of 56.4% ABV, the cask yielded just 95 bottles.
Glen Albyn closed in 1983 during the whisky downturn that saw a number of distilleries fall silent, which makes surviving bottlings like this all the more compelling. Here, the long sherry maturation brings plenty of depth and weight, layering dark fruit, chocolate and spice over polished oak, while still allowing the character of this lost Highland distillery to come through.

Tasting Notes
Colour
Dark amber.
Nose
Rich roast coffee aromas give way to fruitcake, subtle spice and beeswax polish notes. Treacle toffee and charred oak with a hint of dark chocolate truffle.
Palate
Smooth with dried fig, dark cherries and orange peel followed by dark chocolate flavours tempered by cracked black pepper and charred oak.
Finish
Full bodied finish revealing lasting hints of oak and liquorice.
