Distilled on 8 February 1978 and bottled in 2022 at 47.4% ABV, this 43-year-old Mortlach was released by Gordon & MacPhail as part of the prestigious Private Collection series. Matured in a refill American oak hogshead (cask #996), the cask yielded 99 bottles, making it an exceptionally scarce long-aged Speyside single malt.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Sweet Seville orange aromas complement fragrant pineapple alongside a hint of pickled quince. Crystallised vilet notes develop alongside lime, hazelnuts and black pepper.

Palate

Ripe red apples intertwine with dark honey and subtle ginger. Rich exotic fruit flavours give way to a faint herbal edge.

Finish

Full and lightly spicedwith lasting citrus and aniseed.

Mortlach
(mort-LOCK) Mortlach was founded in 1823 on the site of a former illicit distillery, becoming the first legal distillery in Dufftown long before the town was known as the whisky capital of Speyside. Its history is closely tied to George Cowie and later Dr Alexander Cowie, who helped shape the modern distillery, and by 1897 Mortlach had expanded from three stills to six and gained its own railway siding.
