Mortlach Cowie's Blue Seal Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky 20 Year Old
In stock
Tamed for 20 years for a whisky worthy of the Mortlach mark of distinction. In 1973, high on a hill near the Mortlach distillery, treasure was uncovered. The discovery was made at Glenrinnes Lodge by the daughter of the man who masterminded the Mortlach unique 2.81 distillation technique, Dr. Alexander Cowie.
Renovations were being undertaken to the north wing of the grand old lodge when a wooden box was found. Within it, carefully packed in straw, were 12 bottles of a whisky people had long forgotten existed. It was AlexanderCowie’s private stock, a deliciously complex dram that dated back to 1909.
Cowie had no doubt bottled the best that his distillery had to offer at the time and graced it with a seal of the colour of great distinction, a colour that now adorns every single bottle of Mortlach.
This is a new generation of Cowie’s Blue Seal. A selection of our very best Single Malt Scotch Whisky has been matured for a minimum of 20 years to tame “The Beast of Dufftown” in smooth submission and mellow complexity. It is a whisky that would have made the great Alexander Cowie proud.

Tasting Notes
Colour
Deep burnished amber with copper-bronze highlights and a warm, sunlit glow.
Nose
Aromas rise in dark sherry richness: prunes, raisins and fig mingle with cocoa, toffee and toasted oak. Subtle orange zest sparks spice notes of cinnamon and clove, while leather and walnut lend refined depth. The 20-year maturation softens the intensity, releasing a polished malt sweetness that feels warm, seductive, and perfectly poised for contemplation.
Palate
Silky and seductive, the palate unfolds with velvety dark fruit—fig, raisin and plum—touched by sherry sweetness. Rich toffee, espresso notes and a hint of bitter chocolate mingle with oak-spiced warmth—cinnamon, clove and nutmeg—while silky tannins keep it elegant. The finish is long and mellow, leaving a refined warmth that lingers with polished, caramelized oak.
Finish
Long, velvety finish that lingers with warm, refined sweetness. Rich sherry notes unfold into dried fruit, fig and raisin, braided with toasted oak and subtle spice. A cocoa-tinged tail floats away on a gentle, enduring warmth, leaving Mortlach’s restrained power exquisitely smooth.
