Karuizawa (silent) Spirit Of Asama Japanese Single Malt Whisky 12 Year Old
Out of stock
A Japanese single malt from the closed Karuizawa distillery, Spirit of Asama was bottled in 2012 at 55% ABV and matured in sherry casks. Named after Mount Asama, the volcano near the distillery, the release was created from selected casks remaining after production ceased.
Sherry cask maturation brings rich dried fruit, spice and oak depth to Karuizawa’s characteristically intense, full-bodied style, complementing the distillery’s dark fruit richness and firm structure. Produced from dwindling stocks, it represents one of the later official releases from this highly sought-after silent distillery.

Tasting Notes
Colour
Deep amber with mahogany depth and a coppery glow.
Nose
Opulent sherry aroma crowns the glass: dark fruits—ripe plum, fig and raisin—woven with baking spices, cinnamon and clove. Rich oak grants toffee, cocoa and leather notes, while a whisper of espresso threads through, signaling the Spirit of Asama’s intense, full-bodied profile.
Palate
Opulent sherry-enhanced palate with dark fruit compote—plum, fig, raisin—layered with warm spice (cinnamon, clove, nutmeg) and rich oak. Full-bodied and silky at first, it firms through the mid-palate with velvety tannins, a hint of cocoa and espresso, and a long, refined finish that lingers with savoury, oak-driven depth.
Finish
Long, warming finish that lingers with sherry-soaked dark fruit—fig, plum and raisin—alongside cinnamon and clove. Rich oak tannins weave through, with a cocoa-soft echo that slowly fades, leaving a poised, lingering warmth from the 55% spirit.
