Hakushu is the second distillery that Suntory opened in 1973 after Yamazaki way back in 1923 and was at one point in the 1980's the largest distillery in the world in terms of volume of production.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Spiced apricot, musky peach, nectarine, gentle notes of white pepper and some sooty smoke, salted white chocolate.

Palate

Green apple, menthol, white pepper, sweet chilli flakes, gooseberry, lemon and lime, subtle smoke.

Finish

Smoked apricot, spiced apple, white pepper, ginger barley sugar, mint leaf. Lovely mix of subtle smoke and refreshing fruit with a peppery and clean finish from one of my favourite Japanese distilleries.

Hakushu
(hah-koo-SHOO) Hakushu was founded in 1973 by Keizo Saji as Suntory’s second malt whisky distillery, built deep in the forests of the Southern Japanese Alps to mark 50 years since the founding of Japanese whisky. Created to produce a style distinct from Yamazaki, it was established in Yamanashi for its exceptionally soft mountain water and cool, misty climate, and has since become one of the defining names in Japanese single malt.
