Amrut was founded in Bangalore in 1948 by J. N. Radhakrishna Rao Jagdale, shortly after Indian independence. The company began as a producer of Indian-made spirits before developing into one of the most important names in Indian single malt whisky. Its current main distillery is at Kambipura, around 20 kilometres from Bangalore, and was built in 1987.
