Tasting Notes

Colour

Dense copper-amber with mahogany edges and a burnished, wine-warm glow.

Nose

Distinctly malty at first, with fresh woodland hedgerow scents unfolding. Delicate sherry notes linger, weaving with rich toffee, sweet liquorice and orange marmalade to give a warm, inviting aroma.

Palate

Reminiscent of a black forest cake; the initial sweetness develops into fruity blackcurrant jam, maraschino cherry, and creamy vanilla. Freshly peeled orange notes add a fresh lift.

Finish

Well-rounded and lingering, it carries hints of candied citrus and oak that gracefully balance a persistent malty edge.

Mortlach
(mort-LOCK) Mortlach was founded in 1823 on the site of a former illicit distillery, becoming the first legal distillery in Dufftown long before the town was known as the whisky capital of Speyside. Its history is closely tied to George Cowie and later Dr Alexander Cowie, who helped shape the modern distillery, and by 1897 Mortlach had expanded from three stills to six and gained its own railway siding.
