An incredibly mature release of Caol Ila, aged in a refill hogshead and bottled by Gordon & MacPhail as part of its Connoisseurs Choice series. Austere aromas of chamois leather, charred pineapple and menthol appear on the nose, leading to notes of coal smoke, citrus and tar on the palate.

Colour

Pale gold with sunlit straw hues and a whisper of amber.

Nose

Austere nose of chamois leather, charred pineapple and cool menthol.

Palate

Coal smoke leads the palate, wrapped in zingy citrus and a tarry edge. A lean, restrained mouthfeel gives way to a long, smoky finish.

Finish

Long, cool-smoked finish where coal smoke and tar linger, infused with citrus zest and a hint of mineral leather. The peat remains refined, fading to a drying, maritime echo.

Caol Ila
(kowel-EEL-ah) Caol Ila was founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson near Port Askaig on Islay’s east coast, overlooking the Sound of Islay between Islay and Jura. Its Gaelic name refers to that stretch of water, and the site was chosen with access to sea transport and a water supply from Loch nam Ban. Ownership changed early, passing to Norman Buchanan in 1854 and then to Bulloch Lade & Co in 1863.
