About Balmenach
(bal-MEN-ach) Balmenach was licensed in 1824 by James MacGregor at Balminoch Farm, near Cromdale in Speyside, making it one of the older licensed distilleries in the region. The site later passed to Glenlivet Distillers in 1897 and became part of DCL in the 1920s, with much of its production used for blended Scotch rather than official single malt bottlings.
The distillery was mothballed in 1993 before Inver House Distillers acquired it in 1997 and restarted production the following year. Balmenach remains an important blending malt, with independent bottlings carrying much of its single malt presence. The site is also home to Caorunn Gin, first produced there in 2009, using a 1920s copper berry chamber and Scottish botanicals including rowan berry, heather, dandelion, Coul Blush apple and bog myrtle.
