Balmenach Hunter Laing's Old & Rare Single Cask Single Malt Scotch Whisky 40 Year Old · 1983 Vintage
In stock
Distilled at Balmenach in 1983, bottled by Hunter Laing.
Each bottling of Old & Rare has been matured to perfection, so due to the angels’ share there are comparatively few examples to emerge from each cask.
Presented in a highly distinctive squat bottle, each expression comes beautifully packaged in a specially crafted wooden box. The personal tasting notes of our expert “nose” are included to complement the views of each individual taster. It goes without saying that each cask remains unadulterated by excessive filtration or added caramel.
Although each sip from an Old & Rare cask is an exquisite experience the pleasure must be tempered with a little sorrow, due to the fact that such a taste can never be exactly replicated again.

Tasting Notes
Colour
Deep burnished amber with copper-gold highlights.
Nose
Majestic, restrained, the nose opens with polished oak and warm vanilla, unfurling into layers of dried fruit—fig, raisin, and date—woven with orange zest and a dusting of spice. A note of toasted almond and coffee grounds adds depth, while a whisper of sherry sweetness threads treacle and cocoa through an elegant, old-cask bouquet that speaks of decades in the oak.
Palate
Silky and opulent on the palate, this Balmenach 40-Year unfurls with fig, raisin and baked apple, braided with toffee and dark chocolate. Sherried depth supports refined oak, while warm spices—cinnamon, clove and nutmeg—linger with almond and leather notes. Velvet warmth coats the mouth, leading to a long, sophisticated finish that remains perfectly balanced.
Finish
An opulent, lingering finish that unfolds in waves: rich sherry sweetness from dried fig and raisin, woven with cinnamon and clove, then settled into polished oak. The fruit persists with cocoa, leather and a whisper of rancio, delivering a long, refined fade that lingers and invites another slow sip.
