Arran Smugglers Volume 3 - The Exciseman Single Malt Scotch Whisky
In stock
In this Smugglers’ Series Vol.3 ‘The Exciseman’ Arran pay their final tribute to the exuberant character of those striving to outwit the Government’s representatives in the pursuit of the production of the famed Arran Waters.
The Madeira casks used in this final volume, are similar to the ones utilised by Arran’s illicit distillers, who often stored and transported locally produced whisky in old Madeira casks brought over from the continent by their smuggling counterparts. The Quarter Casks are a nod to the type of small casks which would have been the easiest to transport. The resulting liquid is complex, full of character and a perfect tribute to these independent characters of Arran.

Tasting Notes
Colour
Deep amber with coppery highlights and a warm honey-gold glow.
Nose
Madeira-infused sweetness dominates, mingling with sun-kissed citrus and orchard fruit. Treacle and dried fig fold into raisin, backed by a polished oak spine. Notes of cocoa, almond and vanilla drift through caramel and gentle spice, while a briny maritime lift hints at Arran’s island character. A bold, warming aroma that promises depth and intrigue.
Palate
Richly sherried on the palate, with Madeira’s dark fruit and a maritime backbone. Dried fig, orange peel and treacle fuse with roasted almond, cocoa and a touch of smoky salt. Full-bodied and velvety, the 56.8% ABV cushions heat into warmth, revealing spice and toffee while a long, nutty finish lingers with a whisper of charred oak.
Finish
Madeira-laden sweetness lingers, with raisins, fig and orange zest giving way to dark chocolate and toffee. The quarter-cask maturation threads in spice—cinnamon, clove—leaving a long, warm finish with a subtle maritime bite and a final kiss of oak.
