Released for Ardbeg Day 2023, Heavy Vapours Committee Release is a bold, experimental expression that explores what happens when one key part of the distillation process is removed.
For this edition, Ardbeg distilled the spirit without the purifier on the still, a feature normally used to refine and lighten the vapours. The result is a weightier, more intense style of Ardbeg, bottled at a robust cask strength (50.2% ABV for the Committee Release) exclusively for Ardbeg Committee members.
It’s a fascinating twist on classic Ardbeg – familiar maritime peat at its core, but dialled up in depth and intensity thanks to that deliberate distillation tweak.

Tasting Notes
Colour
Deep amber-gold with copper highlights.
Nose
Smoke rises with a cloying sweetness, dense, intense and aromatic. A distinctive farmyard note drifts alongside a crunchy creosote-tarry rope tang. A splash of water loosens the vapours, and dark chocolate cream billows, braided with smoked artichoke.
Palate
Ardbeg’s untamed darker flavors rise, with a burst of bittersweetness that disturbs ash and coal dust, casting a haze of cardamom, peppermint and coffee grits. Clouds of dark chocolate and menthol eucalyptus roll in, obscuring the fruit and floral heart. Wisps of aniseed, cinnamon balls and antiseptic lozenges float on the palate.
Finish
A long, bold finish that clings to the palate with charcoal smoke and coal-dust, softly melting into dark chocolate, menthol and spice, leaving a peppery warmth that lingers well after the sip.
