About Glen Keith
(Glen-KEETH) Glen Keith was built in 1957–58 by Seagram in the town of Keith, on the site of a former meal mill directly behind Strathisla, to supply malt for blends such as Chivas Regal, Passport and 100 Pipers. From the beginning it had a slightly unusual role within Speyside: it became Seagram’s experimental distillery, at one stage running triple-distilled spirit, carrying out yeast and mash trials, and becoming the first distillery to use gas-fired direct heating. In the 1970s it also produced a peated variant under the Glenisla name.
Its history has also been more stop-start than many Speyside distilleries. Glen Keith was mothballed in 1999, reopened under Chivas Brothers in 2013, and returned to the market with its first permanent single malt release in 2017.
The distillery is generally associated with a light, fruity Speyside style, and that combination of modern origins, experimental production history and long importance to blending gives Glen Keith a slightly different profile from many older, more traditional Speyside names.
