Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep burnished amber with copper-gold highlights, a warm, smoky bronze that glows with ember-like radiance.

Nose

Clean, fresh, salty and oceanic on the nose, it develops into sweet malt drying over peat.

Palate

Charred oak and chimney smoke lead the palate, with mineral rock pools and summer tar weaving a coastal, smoky motif that lingers with warmth.

Finish

Long, lingering finish of brown sugar and bonfire ashes, underscored by a real phenolic edge that lingers with smoky sweetness.

Big Peat was introduced by Douglas Laing in 2009 as an Islay blended malt, bringing together single malt whiskies from the island rather than using grain whisky. It forms part of Douglas Laing’s Remarkable Regional Malts range, which presents regional Scotch whisky styles through blended malt bottlings. The core Big Peat recipe includes Islay malts such as Caol Ila, Bowmore, Ardbeg and Port Ellen, with each contributing sweetness, balance, medicinal peat and mature depth respectively.
