This is the Feis Ils 2015 and friends of Laphroaig special edition for the 200 year anniversary of the distillery. This Laphroaig was made using only the malt from Laphroaig's own floor maltings and is approximately 11 to 12 years old distilled in 2003. Bottled at 51.5%ABV and limited to only 20,000 bottles from 1st fill ex bourbon casks.
This is one of the most beautifully poised and well balanced laphroaig releases ever and has one of the most complex noses of the year (or any year?) and is backed up by trademark rich smoke and peat but the more medicinal and iodine notes are balanced out by peppery fruit and there is a lightness and deft touch going on here too. simply stunning and one of my top 10 malts of the year 2015.

Radiant golden amber with a warm honey glow and subtle coppery sheen.
Nose
An impeccably poised, complex nose of Islay peat smoke entwined with medicinal iodine, brightened by peppery fruit. Subtle vanilla-bourbon sweetness and coastal brine thread through the aroma, while a deft, light touch keeps the perfume buoyant. A refined, elegant peat character lingers with a soft, perfumed glow.
Palate
Silken and mouth-coating, this delivers bold peat and medicinal iodine tempered by peppery citrus and orchard fruit. The smoke stays refined, with a bright saline edge, a hint of vanilla from first-fill bourbon casks, and a long, clean finish of ash and pepper.
Finish
Long, refined finish of medicinal iodine and peat smoke, tempered by sea-salt and peppery fruit. The warmth carries bright vanilla and citrus into a clean, lightly resinous echo that lingers gracefully.
