Sazerac acquired the distillery in 1992, and the Buffalo Trace name was introduced for the flagship bourbon in 1999. The name refers to the ancient buffalo migration routes that once crossed the Kentucky River area. In 2013, Buffalo Trace Distillery was designated a National Historic Landmark, recognising the importance of its surviving distillery buildings and its place in American whiskey history.
Today the distillery produces a wide range of Kentucky whiskey, from Buffalo Trace Bourbon, Eagle Rare, W.L. Weller and Blanton’s to the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection and Van Winkle releases. Its house style covers traditional bourbon, wheated bourbon, rye and experimental whiskey, with large-scale production supported by continued investment in ageing warehouses and innovation projects such as Warehouse X.
