About Zuidam
Zuidam was founded in 1975 by Fred van Zuidam in Baarle-Nassau, near the Belgian border, starting with a single copper still and a distillery of around 300 square metres. It remains an independent family business, now run by the second generation, with Patrick van Zuidam leading production and Gilbert van Zuidam overseeing the commercial side. A big part of Zuidam’s identity is that distillation, extracts and production are still handled in house rather than outsourced.
Zuidam makes a wide range of spirits, including genever, gin, rum, vodka, liqueurs and whisky, but Millstone is the most important name in its whisky story. Patrick van Zuidam began experimenting with whisky distillation in 1996, and Millstone went on to become the first Dutch single malt, giving Zuidam a much higher profile beyond the Netherlands. The distillery also grows much of the barley and rye used for Millstone itself, which gives the whisky side of the business a stronger distillery-led identity than many broader spirits producers.
